Today, outside my window, on the street below, the Brooklyn Steppers, a marching band, was performing in honor of Benny A. Lyde, a 21-year-old shot and killed on this block in 2005. The street co-naming ceremony that followed was somber but celebratory. By all accounts, Benny was a decent kid with a great future ahead of him.
